Asbyrgi is a rugged wonderland of old volcanos washed down by torrential streams when the glaciers melted. It is usually explored only in the northern part, but there is a second campsite deep inside the canyon which allows for wonderful evening hikes (the picture below is taken at 22:00 in June)
Old cones (which are harder) remain standing where the calderas are washed away
Here two cones are very close to each other
When the lava cools very fast the columns are formed – usually vertically, but when folded once more, then in all directions
What power and force behind these processes…
Crushing the material in the middle
A very nice example
This resembles an animal head
And the global structure a bit further away
Wonderful formations
And small caves left by the torrents
As we are still in rough country the birches have to adapt accordingly. Lowlying and creeping
