Asbyrgi is a rugged wonderland of old volcanos washed down by torrential streams when the glaciers melted. It is usually explored only in the northern part, but there is a second campsite deep inside the canyon which allows for wonderful evening hikes (the picture below is taken at 22:00 in June)

Old cones (which are harder) remain standing where the calderas are washed away

When the lava cools very fast the columns are formed – usually vertically, but when folded once more, then in all directions

As we are still in rough country the birches have to adapt accordingly. Lowlying and creeping
