As it still was raining we decided to give Dettifoss (which is just around the corner of Myvatn) a try. It turned out to be beautiful, impressive and wet…
The landscape to get there looks like on the moon (except the water and grass, of course
)
Sometimes just nothing
Our brave camper made its way steadily
Then Dettifoss (Europe’s largest waterfall) from a bit of distance
As you can see in the spray we got wind from the left (which brought rain + water from the fall – brrrrr…. wet….)
Yet the sight was just amazing
So powerful
As it was raining heavily the last days the river is already very swollen
So the cascades are just rushing down. It reminds very much of the scene with the river turning into white racing horses in “Lord of the Rings”
A final glimpse before we were totally soaked
Then a little walk further up is Selfoss which is as amazing
This again a HDR version – groovy (actually it fits the feeling there quite good)
As I said – we were soaked
Wet, wet, wet… Fortunately we have a camper so we can at least pretend to dry things and turn the heating on. Poor campers in tents – this must be dreadfully cold.
Then back in Myvatn we gave the sulphur fields another glimpse as it didn’t rain for some minutes ![]()
Mud pools
large and small are everywhere
blubbering around and producing a very appealing smell (well, at least it doesn’t matter, what you are doing
)
Same scene, different viewing angle
These ones are just cute – small blubbering holes of mud
Steam everywhere
And these are natural exhausts
A well intended warning
Perhaps they should invest in a real ashtray?
A final farewell to the pool
There is a camper car company which rents these cars – all are crudely painted and look rather stupid. No idea why, but it seems people like them – perhaps they think it’s cool? Or art??
Well, waiting can be boring… ![]()
Brrrrr! But nice!
