As the weather turned out chillier and chillier we decided to drive to the north towards Myvatn after arriving with the ferry and stay some days there.
The drive alone is worth the whole trip as the landscape changes every second and each river crossing could offer a wonderful view

Between Egilstadir and Myvatn is a very desolate area (entry to the Highlands) which I like very much

It is so full of nothing…

Just colours, shapes and forms

Light plays nice effects

and the sky is always changing

Details are everywhere

And the landscape is just stunning

Amazing colours as well

After arriving in Myvatn at our old campsite (very run down, but very cozy…) this picture was taken at 23:00 – so it is quite very light… Currently darkness (if you can call that) is from 23:45 to 02:50

Myvatn is an area of serious geothermal activity and the colours are outstanding

Walking on the crater rim is a very unique experience – even if a very cold one…

Old craters in the distance

And our old friend

Which is not so small as it looks like

And the old lava eruption fields behind

Geothermal usage is abundant

and the steam / hot water is captured in those domes to be channeled through the pipes to generate energy and warm water

To the right is a warm lake and the spray is drifting over the road

Just some 8 km away and perhaps 150 m higher it changes dramatically… We are talking -2° now (at 3 pm) and it got worse

Steaming mountains under snow

Our brave camper

And Urzula fighting her way back to the base

It is cold…

A bit lower down they capture the natural energy to generate electricity

Old eruption piles

and streams of mineral rich volcanic water

I always love the colours it generates
